Tragic Unearthing: Remains of Vanished Mum and Daughter Located in Freezing Units in the Alpine Nation

The remains of a 34-year-old woman and her 10-year-old daughter have been located inside freezing appliances in an flat in western Austria.

The victims, a Syrian woman and her child, who had been unaccounted for for several months, were found on Friday. The freezers were concealed behind a drywall partition in the flat, situated in the Innsbruck area.

Two men, a 55-year-old Austrian and his brother aged 53, were taken into custody in June. The older man, a work associate of the Syrian woman, told law enforcement last week that there had been an unfortunate event—but rejected intentional killing.

Informing the media recently, a spokesman for the public prosecutor's office said the two suspects were being detained on "high likelihood of homicide".

The names of those concerned have not been disclosed by authorities, in following Austrian law.

Their going missing was initially flagged by the cousin of the mother, who lives in Germany, on the 25th of July last year.

Authorities revealed the 55-year-old suspect informed them at the time she had embarked on an long journey with her daughter to visit her parents in Turkey.

The mother's debit card was then discovered to be utilized in foreign locations several times.

Yet when investigators examined the victim's residence, her cellphone was discovered.

Someone also claimed hearing a commotion in the dwelling, and shouts of "mum" on the day the mother and child were presumed to have gone missing.

An expanded police investigation was launched, with officers discovering various messages transmitted via the victim's mobile—among them a notice of quitting to her workplace and communications to the 55-year-old suspect.

Officials said a four-figure sum was also transferred to the man.

A senior police official informed media representatives on Tuesday that a storage facility had been secured before the mother and child went missing and a freezing appliance had been positioned inside.

The male siblings extracted the cooling unit from the storage space on the day the mother and daughter vanished, she stated. And a week later, they purchased another freezer.

Authorities say they consider this points to the demise were planned in advance.

"The cause of death was not identifiable due to the condition of the remains," Tersch stated.

The prosecutor's spokesman—representing the state—stated the specific order of occurrences is yet to be determined, but the bodies were carefully placed and went unnoticed during a prior examination.

While the brothers were detained in June, it was not until 12 November that the suspect acknowledged an incident and to hiding the bodies. He disputes any murderous intent, authorities stated.

In a related development, his brother confessed to a attempt to hide evidence but disputed awareness of a homicide.

The pair are at this time in detention before court proceedings in prisons in separate locations, approximately 189 kilometers away from each other.

In a joint statement, the nation's official for women's affairs and Justice Minister declared the "reported homicide of mother and child... constitutes the sudden and brutal end of a mother and child and reveals a brutal scheme".

"Females of all ages are falling victim to homicide due to the mere fact that they are of the female gender," they added.

"Gender-based killings are a profoundly embedded and society-wide problem that we must combat firmly."
