The New Animated Series' Opening Sequence Selected the Wrong Critical Role Song

The Mighty Nein, the most recent animated series from Critical Role, unveiled an exciting opening credits. It features the beloved cast of misfits, outcasts, and criminals fighting hard and taking names, while also hinting at several agonizing backstories for key figures such as the voice actor's wizard Caleb, and another actor's warlock orc, Fjord.

Overall, the opening looks amazing. But I couldn't help feeling that an element was missing in the music selection.

This sequence uses "Welcome to Wildemount", a truly stellar song composed by artist the talented musician. This piece from the official score of the same name, the second release put out by the production company's music division their music brand. It's a great sentimental option, and I believe that devotees of the sequel series will love its presence.

But for me, The series' opening fails to capture the hype and energy that was part of the second campaign's live-play sessions. "Your Turn to Roll", written by singer-songwriter Jason Charles Miller, was an instant classic in my view when it was initially unveiled in 2015, and it improved further when co-founder the performer wrote words to the tune for the series' animated intro in the later year.

Including singing from one actress, Laura Bailey, Travis Willingham, as well as the writer, the song was memorable and enjoyable. Back then, I hadn't seen the second campaign at that point, but it was so infectious that I kept it on my phone. This track that excites you before you dive into an installment of fantasy hijinks.

The Mighty Nein's opening with "Welcome to Wildemount" fails to hit the same chords in my opinion. It's an impressive composition, but from what I know of this party, I can't help but feel that its tone is somewhat mismatched.

Naturally, Critical Role has already said that the animated show will have a few surprises and differences from the original live sessions. A tonal change for its intro appears as one of them.

This animated adventure will be released on Prime Video from Nov. 19. For those eager before that, or want a head start to get to know the personas of Critical Role's Campaign 2, the actual play are accessible on the audio platform and YouTube.
