Agencies in Tasmania are working to identify a rosy sludge that has surfaced on a secluded beach, with some scientists worried it could be an algal bloom.
The magenta-hued slime was found on a section of a southern bay about 37 miles south of Hobart. A comparable ooze has also been documented on areas of another local beach and an additional coastal site.
Samples have been collected and provided to the environmental agency for analysis. A representative commented that "phytoplankton proliferations are a natural event in reaction to shifts in food sources, heat, rainfall or sunlight".
"These blooms are at times called crimson or rosy tides because the blooms can turn the water red," the representative noted. "Not all phytoplankton events are toxic, with numerous types serving as a key source of food for creatures in the oceanic food chain."
"The most common cause of reddish water in local waters is the sea plant Noctiluca scintillans, which can cause glowing light shows at night."
Algae outbreaks occur naturally but their occurrence has grown in recent times, partially due to environmental shifts and environmental waste that join together to create food-loaded oceans primed for the rapid spread of dinoflagellates.
Dinoflagellates are a marine plant that usually act as the ocean's garbage cleaners. During a outbreak, there is a fast increase in their numbers that disrupts the healthy balance of aquatic systems.

Lilly Henley, who gathered specimens of the magenta ooze in Tasmania, stated it looked like the potential proliferation had "expanded greatly" and indicated the aquaculture sector was the primary suspect, pointing to comparable events overseas.
"Therefore Tasmania needs to deliver a clear message here, the government and the EPA need to act to this. We need to study the examples we've collected and we need to put word out the people here," she stated.
The scientist said she had worries for public safety after experiencing a numbness along her arms and face while being exposed with affected seawater.
An environmental foundation has documented deceased sea creatures and dead sea cucumbers being found on the beach, with a prominent conservationist calling the situation as an "environmental emergency" and demanding the local leader to inspect and "lead the effort that government must be doing".
