Information Available Concerning the Fatalities of the Bondi Beach Terrorist Incident

No fewer than 16 people perished and more than 40 were wounded when assailants shot at a Hanukkah celebration at Bondi Beach, an incident Australian police have called a terrorist attack.

According to the most recent information, officials have announced the death toll remains at 16, including one of the alleged attackers. Additionally, 42 injured people were admitted to medical facilities.

The deceased have not yet been publicly named, but investigators think their ages range from 10 and 87 years old.

Here are the individuals who are known to date.

Eli Schlanger

Originally from London rabbi Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first to be publicly identified.

Described as a father of five children, he served as the associate rabbi at Chabad of Bondi. Relatives and friends described him as “lively, dynamic, and vibrant and a very kind and sociable person who was dedicated to assisting others”.

“How is it possible that a joyful rabbi who went to a beach to share joy and positivity, to make the world a better place, meet his end in this way?” a family member said.

Schlanger and his wife celebrated the birth of their youngest child just a few months ago.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman was also among those killed, according to his wife.

She told the moments leading up to the shooting, stating they had been standing together when the gunfire started. “He pushed his body up because he wished to be near me,” she said.

The pair were both Holocaust survivors, having faced unspeakable terror in their childhood. They had later immigrated to Australia from Ukraine.

Dan Elkayam

The French foreign ministry have announced that French man Dan Elkayam is among the victims.

Publicly, the Foreign Minister declared that France shared the grief of his family and loved ones, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This despicable act is a new, tragic manifestation of a revolting outpouring of hatred against Jews that we must combat,” the statement read.

One Child

A child who was rushed to the Sydney Children’s Hospital has been confirmed among the fatalities, authorities stated.

One Israeli Citizen

A national of Israel was a fatality during the attack, according to multiple sources referencing the Israeli government.

Those Injured

Of the 42 people taken to hospital, a significant number are still under care, with several in a critical state. Those hurt comprise two police officers who attended the scene.

A casualty is a member of the public who attempted to intervene to confront one of the gunmen. Described as a hero, he sustained bullet wounds but is expected to recover in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

One of those wounded is Arsen Ostrovsky, a public affairs professional. It has been reported he was injured and is receiving treatment in hospital.

Communicating, he recounted the scene as an “absolute bloodbath,” but also praised the actions of those who came to assist. He said he believed it was a “miracle” he was alive.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a media director, was another casualty in the shooting. He told reporters he listened to “a large number” of shots.

“Initially, I believed it was something less lethal, but it’s gone into my own skin and into my leg,” he explained. “I’ve been shot myself. I received first aid. I’m ok.”
