The measure, Proposition 50, was approved by voters Tuesday night, representing a decisive victory for Democrats. The plan temporarily gives the authority to delineate electoral boundaries to the California legislature, enabling it to adopt district maps that are expected to assist the Democratic party pick up five seats in the US House of Representatives.
The plan is a targeted countermeasure to gerrymandering in the state of Texas, where GOP lawmakers, following the US president's direction, have created several new safe Republican districts.
